Hazel worked as a lawyer in private practice and local government for 20 years. She was elected as Member of Parliament for Salford in 1997. She held ministerial roles in Health, Police and Counter Terrorism and was Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
Hazel was Co Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia and campaigned for more resources and better policies to support people to live well in the community with Dementia. Hazel now has a range of activities including being a Director of the Coop Group. She helped to establish the Salford University Institute for Dementia in 2015 which she now Chairs and is also an Alzheimers Society Ambassador.
She is passionate about empowering people living with Dementia to determine their own lives and the Salford Institute has a group of Associates living with Dementia who shape its policies and research and education programmes.
